To dial-in to Grex, you need a standard communications program, like Terminal or Hyperterminal under Windows. Note that you cannot (yet) make PPP connections on these lines. Set your terminal paramaters to no parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit (N-8-1). The phone number is +1 734 484 0512. These modems run at 14.4 Kb and connect to Grex directly. This is a local call in Ann Arbor, and can be reached without toll charges throughout eastern Washtenaw County, as well as parts of western Wayne County. We do not have any dial-ins at any other locations.
If you are calling long distance from the US or Canada, use area code 734. Long distance use of these lines is not recommmended, except for very short periods in an emergency, because it will cost you so much money.
When both of Grex's dial-in lines are in use, you'll get a busy signal. Fortunately, this is not a common occurrence. You can keep redialing until you connect, or try again another time.
Some programs on Grex, such as pine and lynx, require that your terminal software provide some kind of terminal emulation. Most software supports "vt100" emulation which is perfectly adequate for these programs. Check your software to see what it supports. You can set your terminal emulation settings on Grex to match it by using the "change" command. This is accessed from non-unix prompts (e.g. Menu, lynx, and bbs) by preceding "change" with an exclamation point.
If you have problems connecting to our modems, first make sure you have set the communications parameters to no parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bits.
You may have problems such as lost characters or failures doing file transfers or reading large files or responses at 14.4 Kb if you do not have hardware flow control activated in your modem settings or communications software, or if you do not have a proper modem cable that passes hardware flow control signals. These signals and settings are sometimes called "DSR/DTR" or "CTS/RTS".
